Joanna Michal Hoyt is a community volunteer, farmer, and freelance writer currently living and working in Massachusetts. As a celibate bisexual Christian who enthusiastically supports marriage equality, she fits oddly in most political groups but has good connections with a wide variety of friends and neighbors. This story was inspired by that, and by her time living and working with migrants and asylum seekers, and also by her relationships with preppers and her wish to envision a more communal and generous response to disaster.
Her labor-history novel Cracked Reflections was published by Propertius Press in 2021. Her short speculative stories have appeared in publications including Mysterion, On Spec, and Daily Science Fiction, and also in the single-author collection Believing Is Seeing, published by WolfSinger in 2022.
